Shy Watters

Master Weaver & Cultural Artist

Shy Watters is a member of the shíshálh Nation with Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Tla'amin, and Kwakwaka'wakw ancestry. Her weaving reflects the richness of these cultural traditions, bringing together distinctive Coast Salish designs, stories, and teachings through her art.

For more than nineteen years, Shy has specialized in weaving with red and yellow cedar, creating intricate hats and other traditional works that are widely recognized for their beauty and craftsmanship. Her work is frequently featured in cultural ceremonies and celebrations, where it honours the enduring traditions of her ancestors.

Sharing knowledge across generations is at the heart of Shy's work. As a teacher, she offers cedar weaving workshops on the Sunshine Coast and throughout British Columbia, inspiring others to learn, create, and connect with Indigenous culture. While working on the Weaving Tears into Dreams of Reconciliation project, her granddaughter River was born. Today, River is already learning the traditions of cedar weaving, continuing a family legacy of knowledge, creativity, and cultural pride.

Through every woven piece, Shy honours her ancestors while helping ensure that the teachings of cedar weaving continue to be shared with future generations.
