kwayimin Andy Johnson

Weaver, Language Teacher & Cultural Ambassador

kwayimin Andy Johnson was born and raised on the Sunshine Coast and is a respected weaver, shashishalhem language teacher, and Cultural Ambassador for the shíshálh Nation. Inspired by the teachings of his grandmother, Cecil August, he developed a deep appreciation for the language, history, and cultural traditions of the shíshálh people from an early age.

Since learning the art of weaving in 2005 from Janice George and Buddy Joseph of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), Andy has shared his knowledge through workshops and community projects. His work includes ceremonial sashes, shawls, tunics, wall hangings, memorial blankets, and other traditional woven pieces, while teaching the skills and traditions of Coast Salish weaving to others.

Andy is also the shashishalhem language teacher at Kinnikinnick Elementary School and the lead singer of the tl'ikw'am Dance Group, for whom he has written several traditional songs.

Through language, music, weaving, and cultural education, he continues to inspire new generations while helping strengthen and celebrate the living traditions of the shíshálh Nation.
