Events
syiyaya days 2024
PAST EVENTS
a commitment to truth, reconciliation, and community participation.
- Highlights
- A program spanning more than a week was established, featuring cultural, educational, and artistic activities.
- Guided walks, discussion sessions, musical performances, family activities, and experiences designed to share the history and worldview of the shíshálh Nation took place.
- The event continued to incorporate Canada Day celebrations within a narrative centered on reconciliation and the recognition of Indigenous territory.
Significant Changes
One of the most significant moments was the postponement of several ceremonial events, including:
- the unveiling ceremony of a carved pole,
- a performance by artist Ecko Aleck,
- a talk by Indigenous leader Robert Joseph.
These activities were postponed following the passing of a respected Elder from the shíshálh community—a decision made out of respect for the community.
2024 Legacy
Important community works were also unveiled during the year:
- Carving Tears into Dreams of Reconciliation
- Weaving Tears into Dreams of Reconciliation
These art installations were created through a collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and stand as permanent symbols of the reconciliation process in Sechelt.
They would later be recognized as one of the major achievements of the syiyaya movement.
