Transforming Tears into Hope

The Carving Tears into Dreams of Reconciliation project celebrates the enduring tradition of shíshálh cedar carving while bringing people together through culture, creativity, and shared learning. Guided by shíshálh Master Carver Ɂantuni Tony Paul, the project invited community members to experience the cultural significance of cedar carving while reflecting on the ongoing journey of truth, healing, and reconciliation.

At the heart of the project is the creation of the Reconciliation Totem Pole, envisioned as a lasting symbol of remembrance, resilience, and hope. Throughout the carving process, participants were invited to learn about the stories, teachings, and traditions reflected in the pole's design while taking part in meaningful conversations about reconciliation.

The pole was envisioned and led by shíshálh Master Carver Ɂantuni Tony Paul, whose artistry, generosity, and cultural knowledge inspired hundreds of participants. Following the tragic passing of Tony and his wife, Cindy, in 2021, the project paused as the community came together to honour their lives and their legacy.

Today, the work continues with deep respect for Tony's vision, in accordance with the wishes of his family and the traditions of the shíshálh Nation. The Reconciliation Totem Pole was completed and unveiled on July 8, 2024, at the site of the former St. Augustine Indian Residential School, where it stands as a lasting tribute to Survivors, their families, and the collective journey toward reconciliation.

Since the project began, more than 1,500 people have participated in the carving experience, learning about the art of cedar carving, the story behind the pole, and the importance of reconciliation. Every person who helped shape the cedar also became part of its story—a story that continues to bring people together through truth, healing, and hope.

The Reconciliation Totem Pole carries the stories, teachings, and hands of the many people who have been part of its journey. Through ceremony, community members came together to honour the pole, the Survivors whose experiences it represents, and the vision and legacy of shíshálh Master Carver Ɂantuni Tony Paul.These moments reflect more than the creation of a pole. They honour a journey of remembrance, cultural strength, healing, and our continuing commitment to reconciliation.
